'Building Highly Effective Leaders of English'

BHELE is a professional development cluster series targeted at leaders of English (Heads and Assistant Heads of Department). It will provide a structured programme delivered over 10 sessions in Terms Two and Three 2010. The aim of this programme is establish a Professional Learning Community that will share their ideas, resources and expertise.

 

Cluster meetings will take place in C12 at the Faculty of Education, Epsom Ave, Epsom. They will occur fortnightly from 4pm-6pm on a Thursday. The dates will be: 22/04 (note 3 week space), 13/05, 27/05, 10/06, 24/06, 22/07, 12/08, 26/08, 09/09, and 23/09. Afternoon tea will be provided.

Session One: Self-Review and needs of the group (confirming programme content)

 

Session Two: New literacy standards: getting to know them and the implications for English

 

Session Three: Getting ready for Level One NCEA 2011 (programme design)

 

Session Four:  Getting ready for Level One NCEA 2011 (task design)

 

Session Five: Effective Pedagogy - thematic teaching and differentiation

 

Session Six: Teaching as Inquiry and growing independent teachers in your department

 

Session Seven: Junior programmes and the role of assessment

 

Session Eight: Best Practice: moderation, appraisal and department systems

 

Session Nine: ICTs in English
